WordPress Leaning Towards New Core JavaScript Framework

Sarah Gooding of WordPress Planet is reporting that WordPress core contributors have
either have decided or will decide soon on an alternative to Backbone.

Backbone.js created by Jeremy Ashkenas (also known for CoffeeScript and Underscore.js) is a JavaScript framework with a RESTful JSON interface and is based on the model–view–presenter (MVP) application design paradigm.
Backbone is known for being lightweight (one of the reasons why it was adopted by Team WordPress since version 3.5) , as its only hard dependency is on one JavaScript library, Underscore.js, plus jQuery for use of the full library. It is designed for developing single-page web applications, and for keeping various parts of web applications (e.g. multiple clients and the server) synchronized.

According to the report, some of the factors that will drive the eventual decision are “stability, longevity, maturity, adoption, accessibility, proven in a WordPress context, and extensibility, among others” and the top contenders are React vs Vue with WordPress lead, Matt Mullenweg publicly stating that Automattic is betting on React long-term.
